Lowerline's Lagniappe - What's in a name?

History is remembered by places, names of people, and dates. All one needs to do is mention the word Lowerline and I am  brought back to memories of the home of my grandparents, Mary & Septime Poirrier (A.K.A. - Gammy and Gampy), and their home on a street named Lowerline in the city of New Orleans. Lagniappe is a noun that's definition is: “ something given as a bonus or extra gift". The origin is Louisiana French, from Spanish la ñapa. On menus in New Orleans, side dishes might be listed as Lagniappe. This site has recipes and lagniappe from those who are part of the "Lowerline" Poirrier extended family.

As you read and/or prepare these recipes just remember:

“No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at their most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generation of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.”   Laurie Colwin -Home Cooking (1988)

This is the Poirrier Family Crest. The name Poirrier is a French surname meaning Pear Tree.
